Mixed Fruit Smoothie with Kale & Chia Seeds

Did anyone watch the Oscars this Sunday? I am sure there are very few not raising their hands right now. There was one reason we did watch it (and had to stream it since we don't have cable right now), but sadly we were disappointed in the outcome.

I am going to (try to) keep this part of my post brief, because I don't want to bore anyone, and I am sure there are plenty of people annoyed with my twitter feed right now. I don't mean to be so one-sided or preachy with this, but I think people need to be informed on this. I hope you'll still love me after this. ;)

At the Oscars this Sunday, someone was trying to raise the issue about how a VFX (visual effects) studio called Rhythm and Hues has recently filed bankruptcy despite the fact that the movie they worked on, Life of Pi, made over 500 million dollars and won several Academy Awards, including best visual effects. In the middle of this person trying to address the problem, he was abruptly cut off by none other than the theme music of Jaws. This movie - Life of Pi, was made for a mere $120 million, and made over $500 mill, which is $400 million in profit, yet the company who MADE one of the two main characters is closing. This is the problem that needs to be addressed.

As strange as it sounds that I am standing up for VFX artists, if this isn't addressed, movies will forever be changed, and no one will enjoy them. Prices will likely go up to see a movie, and all you will see in this movie is a green screen because there will be no visual effects artists to fill in the beautiful imagery that you're used to seeing in films these days. No visual effects, because artists aren't being treated right, and the VFX studios will be forced to close, as so many already have. Imagine watching the titanic, but with no boat.  Or the avengers but no incredible hulk, or Avatar with practically nothing at all.

My husband works in the VFX industry (animation is very closely related), so it is near and dear to my heart. If this continues without a change for the good, he will be out of a job, as will every other animation/VFX artists. Instead of standing up for these artists, the film studios would rather see VFX be cheaper, and with tighter deadlines. Understand that the people making these films are just everyday people with families like me and you and in the current state these hard working individuals are working unthinkable hours and have to constantly move and uproot their families in order to keep working. It is heartbreaking, and especially that despite these movies doing so well, they lose their jobs. Sunday night, a group of people accepted an Academy Award for best Visual Effects, yet they are all jobless.

I wont go on anymore, except to say I hope you look more into this if you are curious what the buzz is all about. Read a few articles on the problem, and see why I am standing up. If we don't stand up for what is right, then who will. The film executives won't. So we need to. You can find some good articles on this issue here:

VFX Protest

I really hope I don't lose followers over this. I am not normally such a protester, but it needed to be said. I am just a wife trying to support her husband. I am sorry we can now move on to something a little tastier :)

Have you seen or heard of these little seeds? They are called chia seeds. A lot of people (including myself for a while) think (thought) that they are chai seeds, spelled like the popular tea drink, but really it is spelled and pronounced like the silly little "pets" we all used to own when we were young that you plant the seeds, and they grow "hair". Chia, not chai. We learn something everyday ;)

I recently learned about these seeds and how good they are for you. Unlike flax seeds, they don't need to be ground in order for you to get their nutrition. Yet they are considered a super food for all the health benefits they provide. I found some really good info and recipes here at One Green Planet. I am not being compensated for this, I just wanted you all to know the things I have recently learned about these seeds, and tell you to incorporate them into your diet, as I have started to do.

I want you to know that although I am incorporating healthy choices into my diet, I am not denying myself of the things I love, even if they are not exactly healthy. Last night, Matt and I had hamburgers for dinner, and fries on the side. And beer :) Yep! I just thought you should know that I am just adding in healthy ingredients here and there, and that is working for us. I'm not perfect, and I am certainly not going to sacrifice the foods I love. I think indulgence is good for the soul, as long as it is moderate. That is all. Thanks ;)

I had a little bit of a hard time making this smoothie, since I have a food processor, not a blender, but it worked well enough haha. I would suggest using a blender if you have the choice, but if all else fails, your food processor will get the job done. My smoothie ended up being more of a "thickie", not a smoothie, and I would have added more liquid but I ran out of room. So feel free to add more to yours.

This was also suppose to be green, since it has kale. I don't know what I always do wrong when making green smoothies, but they never end up green. Maybe its the mixed berries, with the dark fruits, but they always end up purple. But no matter, they are still super healthy for you, and I promise it tastes really good, despite the kale! You cannot even taste it. I promise. I wouldn't drink it if I could taste the kale! So don't fret :) It has plain Greek yogurt and low fat milk, and honey for a little added sweetness, but natural, so again, healthy for you. And feel free to substitute any fruit. Maybe you'll have better luck with the color ;)

  3. Smoothies are my favorite way to eat chia seeds, especially when the smoothies contain berries! Oh, and I actually kind of prefer the purple color of a smoothie to the green color! :)

  7. Who in the world would stop following you because of this?! That'd be ridiculous. Although I suppose people are ridiculous sometimes. :(

Good for you for supporting the industry!

And this smoothie looks wonderful! I make a blueberry smoothie to photograph yesterday and it instantly turned brown on top. Very ugly.

  8. I have added spinach to smoothies but never kale! I think I need to try it. Do you taste any bitterness from the kale?

    1. You should definitely try adding kale! Its very good :) I did taste a little bit of bitterness until I added in a little honey. That helped a lot! I recommend doing the same :) But I promise it is good!! I hope you enjoy it!
